Namesake Names

Book Character Names:

Ashoke: Meaning "without sorrow", derived from the King Ashoka.
The book says his name means "he who has transcended grief." This makes sense because of Ashoke's perseverance over his tragedy and the death of his friend.

Ashima: Meaning "boundless", feminine from of Asim
The book says her name means "she who is limitless." This is not true because Ashima feels limited by her life in America.

Nikhil: Meaning "whole, entire"
The book says his name translates to "he who is entire, encompassing all." This explains how Gogol "encompasses" both American and Bengali culture. Even though he may not like it.

Sonali: Meaning "gold", feminine form of Sonal
The book translates Sonia's name as "she who is golden." This makes sense in how Sonia is viewed to be successful in how she grabbed the dollar bill over the other objects.

My Family Names:

Noah: Meaning "rest" This is sort of true because I do enjoy to sleep, but this is not true in the sense that I am restful. Many times I feel more worried than calm.

Deanna: Meaning "heavenly, divine" Variant of "Diana"
This name makes sense for my mom because she is heavenly, even though at times I may not think so.

Jim: Derived from "James" This name has not direct meaning but it comes from the biblical name of James. If I had to give it a meaning I would say it means "hard worker" because my dad is a very hard worker.
