Folklore Song

"Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell

This song is considered folklore because when it was written in 1970, the world and especially America was going through economic changes, and the song was a cultural riposte to the government's decisions. The song was written as a response to the rapid urbanization and deforestation of natural land. Mitchell most likely wrote this to voice her opinion about the importance of land preservation and a "green" society. In the song there is a line that states, "They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum." This response was the idea of Mitchell and many others in the "hippie" movement that was in the 60s and 70s. Another line refers to a toxic chemical that was used as a pesticide to make fruits and vegetables "look more clean." The folklore of the song being the overarching theme of the end of cities and businesses exploiting the planet for its resources and
